If access to the private side of my network is needed, here are the steps and settings that need to be performed on a windows 2000 box. I will warn you that while your connection is up and running, you will loose your general access to the internet as all trafic is routed to the IP address you are assigned. If you have any webpages that reload automaticaly, or any instant messageing programs, while you have the VPN up, you will get errors.:
- Click on Start -> Settings -> Dialup and Network Connections -> Make a New Connection
- When the Wizard loads, click next
- Choose the third option, "Connect to a Private Network through the Internet" and click next
- Change the next screen setting to "do not dial the initial connection" and click next
- Put in the host name of "thehaleyhouse.com or the ip 209.98.145.173 and click next
- Choose whether you want the tunnel available for all users or you self and click next
- Lable the connection so you can ID it easily such as "The Haley House VPN" and click next
- Put in your user name that you have been given and your password. You can also set it to remember if you are lazy.
Click on the Properties button and set the following:
Change the Security Tab to "Advanced (custom settings)" and click on the settings button.
Leave the pull down box set to Require Encryption and uncheck Microsoft CHAP (MS-CHAP) but leave Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)
Go to the "Networking" tab and uncheck "NetBEUI Protocol" and "File and Printer sharing..." but leave TCP/IP along with "Client for Microsoft Networks"
You should now be set to connect.
Once Connected to access the file server, click on Start -> Run and type in "\\172.17.50.30\ "
You should see the share drives for you shortly that you can map for faster responce after you supply your user name.
