Here are the steps needed to create a self extracting Zip file.
Note that if you want to have a password on the self extracting zip file you will need to apply the password to the zip file itself before proceeding. To add a password, click on the menu "Options" and go to "Password..." You will need to verify the password before it is set on the file.
- Open the zip file you want to make into a self extracting file or create a new zip file.
- Click on the menu for Actions and go down to "Make .Exe File"
- The window that pops up should have the file name that you have opened or just created. Most of the default settings should work, and if you want you can specify which folder it will open to when run, but may cause issues as most Windows systems after Windows 98 use user names in the file paths. Click the "OK" button to create the file.
- A small window will pop up when it is done asking if you want to test the new file, it is up to you but I never have had an issue with it.
- If you test the file with the pop up, it will be the same as double clicking on the file and you should see a small window asking if you want to Unzip, run Winzip, or Close. You can and should click browse (or tell the recipient to,) to decide where to save the file(s) on their computer.
- Browsing is the same as always with local and network drives, and a shortcut at the top for the user's desktop.
- Once a location is chosen, click ok and then Unzip in the original window.
- The progress indicator will show the file name and total status of the extraction.
- The user will then get a pop up telling how many files were extracted.
- The user then can choose Close when all done.
